Most of us consider performance reviews are the most difficult thing to face as a professional. But the right planning can work for you.
The best way is to document it weekly/bi-weekly.
- Think about milestones, tasks, and deliverables you achieved.
- Mention the challenges you faced, how you overcame them, and what you learned from them.
- Pieces of training you did and how that helped to achieve your goals.
Organize your review
With all the data in place, organize and summarize your data in a way that leads to actions. Things that help accomplish the goal, move towards a goal, and create new goals.
Include any feedback you got from other people throughout the year and how you acted on it. This will give your supervisor a positive impression that yes you are listening and working on their feedback.
It’s always good to add numbers to your review, everyone loves numbers.
- I achieved the target in n days and how did it help in achieving the company’s targets.
- I did x things that increased performance by y amount
Learn about your supervisor
Learning about your supervisor may sound insignificant but it is not. It is important to understand what your supervisor expects from you. Some may focus on the goals achieved, some may focus more on the failures and the lessons from them, and some may require a one-line summary and some detailed ones. It is always good to understand your supervisor.
Evaluate your self-reviews
- Punctuality: You must submit your reviews on time. No one likes follow-up and delayed responses to tasks.
- Honest Ratings: In most organizations, there are 360 reviews, supervisors are also aware of your contribution, so you must be honest with your reviews and ratings. This gives them confidence that you were thinking about it and was not just a random task.
- Get a second opinion: It is not a bad idea to ask for a second opinion which can check for errors and can tell if the tone is constructive.
It is not as difficult as we consider it to be. Just a little planning and you will start liking the process and can make it work for you.
All the best for your reviews :))
